Call +91 99851 88851 if you have

  • Fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or more
  • Pain that keeps getting worse
  • Discharge that increases or smells bad
  • No stools for three days in spite of the stool softener

Go to the nearest emergency department now if you have

  • Heavy bleeding, with clots, or soaking a pad every hour
  • Being unable to pass urine
  • Fever with severe pain and swelling near the anus
Warm sitz bath two to three times a day
Walk a little every few hours from day one
No heavy lifting until your surgeon says so

The first day at home

  • Most patients go home the same day. An adult should take you home.
  • Some discomfort and a little bleeding or discharge are expected.
  • Wear a pad in your underwear to protect your clothes.

Wound care

  • Sit in a tub of warm water (sitz bath) for 10 to 15 minutes, two to three times a day and after each stool.
  • Gently pat the area dry. Do not rub.
  • A little bleeding with stools is common for one to two weeks.
  • If you have a fistula wound, have the dressing or packing done as advised until it heals.

Pain

  • The first few stools are usually the most painful. Take your painkiller about 30 minutes before you expect to pass stools.
  • Take the stool softener every day as prescribed, so that stools stay soft.
  • Do not strain, and do not sit on the toilet for long or use your phone there.

Eating and drinking

  • Eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, dal and whole grains for fibre.
  • Drink plenty of water through the day, unless your doctor has told you to limit fluids.
  • Try to pass stools when you first feel the urge. Do not hold it in.
